riverrun1979riverrun: Through the Years

Since 1974, students at Dowling have been producing the literary magazine riverrun. In those thirty-odd years the magazine has been host to poems, short stories, one-act plays, photographs, drawings - the creative output of students, faculty, staff and alumni. This display, produced in conjunction with riverrun's 2007 issue, provides a look at the life of the magazine. Also included are samples of riverrun precursors: Idle Hour and Renaissance Faire. These issues do not circulate but are preserved in the Library's Archives. The current issue of riverrun is available in the Library and other locations across campus.

Study in Italy

Study in Italy

In June 2007 a number of Dowling students joined professors Susanne Bleiberg Seperson and Maura Pilotti for a week of study in Rome. The items and photos in this display document their time in the eternal city with a side trip to Pompeii. Library resources also help illuminate classwork they completed in urban sociology and contemporary Italy.

Costa RicaCosta Rica: Land Between Two Oceans

Members of the Dowling community explored the flora and fauna of Costa Rica over the 2007 Winter semester. Sponsored by Dowling College and the Dowling Institute and led by Dr. John Tanacredi, participants braved river rapids, butterfly gardens and active volcanoes as they learned about the ecological bounty of this unique region.

It's never too early to start planning. Created by part-time librarian Christine Cesaria, this display highlights creative resources for teachers thinking about their fall lessons. The Library's Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) offers a variety of sources to inspire K-12 activities. Thinking outside the Library, Materials Resource Center (MRC) in Ronkonkoma provides reclaimed scrap and surplus items that can be used in any number of hands-on activities. The items in this display were all created with materials from the MRC.

Writers on Long Island

Writers on Long Island

In conjunction with the College's Annual Theme of "Celebrating Long Island" we are highlighting authors who live on or write about Long Island. From classic fiction, such as Peter Benchley's Jaws and F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, to the poetry of Walt Whitman, this display spans Nassau and Suffolk counties, and many time periods.

Test your nerves against the master and discover how he shocked and disturbed audiences for much of the 20th century. Running in conjunction with the class The Films of Alfred Hitchcock (MED 2041A) taught by Dr. Richard Wolff.

Beautiful. Dark. And dangerous. Plumb the depths of cynicism and postwar anxiety through the books and guides in this display. In conjunction with Dr. James Tate's senior seminar, Film Noir (ASC 4141C).
