Dowling College Library respects the privacy of our patrons and believes that privacy is essential to intellectual freedom

Confidentiality of User Records

It is the policy of our Library to protect each Library user's right to privacy and confidentiality as stated in the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association "with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired, or transmitted." Accordingly, the Library will not disclose such information except in accordance with proper judicial order and with permission of the designated administrative officer(s) of the College.

Web Site Privacy

Dowling College Library uses Google Analytics to analyze web traffic. When you visit our web site, Google Analytics may store some or all of the following information: the internet address (IP address) from which you access the web site, date and time, the internet address of the web site from which you linked to our site, the name of the file or words that you searched, items clicked on a page, and the browser and operating system used. This information is used to measure the number of visitors to the various sections of our site and identify system performance or problem areas. We also use the information to analyze patterns of usage and to make the site more useful. This information is not used for associating search terms or patterns of site navigation with individual users, and no personal information is collected in this process. Please note that chat sessions are conducted anonymously and that no personally identifying information is required to participate in using this service. At times, a user may choose to share their email address to receive extended help. This email address is not shared beyond that individual session and cannot be accessed by any other chat sessions that may be occurring at the same time.

Chat session transcripts are saved to analyze the amount and types of questions that are being asked. This helps us to determine appropriate staffing, as well as determinig new information to add to our help pages. If you would like to have the record of your chat session deleted, please contact Laura Pope Robbins and give her the date and exact start time of your chat session.

The information collected by the Library is only accessible to Librarians associated with the Ask a Librarian service and is not shared with anyone outside of Dowling College Library. Statistics generated from chat logs, as well as excerpts, may be used for reports or publications. However, information about specific individuals that may be included within a chat transcript will never be shared outside of the Library.
