Citing Your Resources

Doing ethical research means citing sources. It is critical to credit writers for their work and their contributions to your research. To not do so is unethical and leads to plagiarism - unintentionally or not. Here are some sources to help you cite properly and to avoid the problem of plagiarism.

The Long Island Historical Journal is indexed by PERSI - PERSI is not avaialable at Dowling College

Long Island History Journal
The Long Island History Journal is a peer-reviewed academic online publication, published by the Center for Global & Local History at Stony Brook University. It continues the Long Island Historical Journal.

New York History
New York History is indexed for each volume at the end of that volume. There is NO general index.

Web Sites

Italian Genealogical Group
The Italian Genealogical Group has records and advice on how-to research your Italian heritage. It also has two searchable databases: The Nassau County, NY - Naturalization Records (includes Camp Mills and Aviation Field #2) and Suffolk County, NY - Naturalization Records (includes Camp Upton).

Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island
The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island links to local, national, and international resources for search Jewish family roots.

Long Island Genealogy
LIG includes 180+ searchable resources and a query board. List also provides biographical sketches and useful bibliographies on biographical sources.

Long Island Genealogy Page
A collection of Long Island genealogical pages that is maintained by the Long Island's Page of Pages. List include links to organizational, family, and individual genealogical resources.

NY GenWeb
This is the New York state portion of the US GenWeb Project. The Project is organized at the county level and/or state level. Each region project will vary, but may include: search postings, family reunion bulletin boards, state histories, and maps showing the changing county boundaries, among others. Many states also have ongoing projects as diverse as the transcription of Civil War regiments or the reuniting of families with lost photos, bibles, etc.

Long Island Books Online
This is a collection of historical book about Long Island that has been scanned and loaded by SUNY Stony Brook. The collection is varied in content.

Long Island Forum Index
The index for the Long Island Forum was created by the Patchogue Medford Library. It covers the full run of the magazine from its beginning (volume 1, issue 1) until its completion (volume 67, issue 2).

Long Island Genealogy
Long Island Genealogy offers three very useful sections: family histories under “Surname Database”; town histories & town records under “Long Island Records”; and a collection of various resources found on the main page.

NYGenWeb
The main page covers general New York State information and resources; click on “Choose a county” and when map appears click on desired county (Suffolk, Nassau, Queens) and a page with county specific links will appear

Suffolk Historic Newspapers
This site offers access to seven historic newspapers from Suffolk County variously covering the timeframe of 1839–1931. These newspapers include: Corrector (Sag Harbor - 1858–1871); County Review (Riverhead 1903–1923);Long Island Traveler (Cutchogue 1883–1893); Long Islander (Huntington 1839–1859); Port Jefferson Echo (Port Jefferson 1892–1904); South Side Signal (Babylon 1870–1883).
