Faculty Plants Garden Honoring Long-Time Professor
by Caroline Cosgrove
A garden to honor the late Dr. Steven Shafer, Professor of Biology at Dowling College, will be planted this spring. Shafer, who passed away in September of last year, was a vital member of the Dowling institution for over 34 years.
In addition to the garden, a scholarship will be established in memory of Shafer, who founded the Dowling College Faculty Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will fund the education of students in the science curriculum.
During his 34 years with Dowling, Shafer remained active in both student and faculty affairs. He helped to lead the decision to build the Kramer Science Center and served on five negotiating committee during faculty contract negotiations, the most recent during his retirement.
The fund for both the garden and scholarship were fully donated by the faculty union as well as individual faculty members, staff, and administration. The town of Patchogue, which Shafer was also avidly involved in, has also made donations for the fund.
A memorial service will [was] held in honor of Shafer on Wednesday, March 23 from 4pm-6pm in the Hunt Room in Fortunoff Hall.
