Light, More Light
A Photo-Installation by Bryan Whitney

The Anthony Giordano Gallery is pleased to present this installation in conjunction with an exhibition of his photographs entitled Infrastructures at The Anthony Giordano Gallery.

Each of these windows depicts a species of plant life that Mr. Whitney photographed under X-ray conditions to make them at once both naturalistic and abstract. Their botanical subjects recall the room’s original function as a palm house during the Vanderbilt occupancy, but the ghostly images also evoke the stained glass windows of Gothic cathedrals and their associations with divine illumination. In accordance, the text that runs along the top of the windows is a translation of the dying words of the German poet and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who called for “Licht! Mehr Licht!” moments before passing away. These windows operate in this tradition by giving natural light and organic forms a spiritual significance and transcendental presence.

Mr. Whitney dedicates this piece to the Memory of his mother.

Exhibition Dates:
