Mattie West, 35, was a domestic worker at the home of the E. W. Schwerin family on Connetquot Drive in Oakdale, NY. On September 19, 1932 she was murdered by John McKinney on the grounds of the Vanderbilt Hotel - the former W.K. Vanderbilt mansion known as “Idle Hour” in Oakdale, NY. She was buried in Union Cemetery in Sayville, NY on September 20, 1932 in an unmarked grave - as no relatives could be located at that time. (John Mckinney was executed for her murder in Sing Sing Prison on September 1, 1933.)
