President Gaffney Reflects on the Career of Dr. Joseph Burger
by President Robert J. Gaffney

The Dowling College community was greatly saddened by the passing of Dr. Joseph Burger on Monday, November 12, 2007. We were fortunate to have such a devoted faculty member at our institution and express our sincere condolences to Dr. Burger’s family.

A member of the Dowling College faculty since 1975, Dr. Joseph Burger was a dedicated Professor of Special Education at the Dowling College School of Education. He was greatly respected by his colleagues and well known in the field of Special Education. Dr. Burger was an advocate for education, and his dedication to teaching was very evident.

Over the years, Dr. Burger served the College community by participating on academic committees and extra-curricular initiatives that affected the very life of the College.

Dr. Burger, who maintained a psychotherapy practice, was committed outside the classroom to student advising, mentoring and outreach. He was a sound confidante to his students as well as colleagues.

The Dowling College phone lines were flooded with calls from Dr. Burger’s students and former students who wanted to attend his services. We are honored that Marsha Burger intends to institute a Dowling College scholarship fund in her husband’s name. There is no doubt that Dr. Joseph Burger’s contribution to the Dowling College community will continue.
